So, the Leaping Bunny people, whose standards I love and cherish, unfortunately restrict themselves to non-animal-tested cosmetics and household products.  So they’re NOT VERY USEFUL when it comes to pet food.  (Leaping Bunny people?  This would be a GREAT area to expand to.)  As pet food is near and dear to my heart, I went looking for another list of cruelty-free petfoods.

Luckily, PETA has a list of cruelty-free pet food.  I don’t characterize it as a 100%-cruelty-free list, because PETA does NOT make sure these companies SUPPLIERS supply the companies with non-animal-tested ingredients.  It’s really more of a 50%-cruelty-free list because of that.  God only knows what suppliers do to the ingredients.  But it’s better than nothing — you can rest assured that the final products of these pet foods at least have not been tested on animals.

Thank you PETA for providing this list!  It may not be perfect but it’s better than anything else out there :)

(I don’t buy commercial pet food — I cook for my dog.)

(If you’re interested in senior diet pet food, I have a list here.)

(If convenience is an issue for you, Whole Foods carries Newman’s Own and Halo petfoods.)

What’s wrong with pet food?

Most caring consumers would never guess that lonely dogs and cats are confined to tiny, barren laboratory cages for years on end and subjected to horrible experiments in order to est dog and cat food.

To expose this tragedy, PETA conducted a nine-month undercover investigation of a aboratory that performed cruel animal tests for Iams and other major companion-animal ood companies. What our investigator uncovered, including the following, would outrage anyone with a heart:

  • Lonely dogs driven mad from confinement to barren steel and cement cells
  • Dogs dumped on cold concrete flooring after having chunks of muscle cut out of their thighs
  • Experimenters who severed dogs’ vocal cords in order to keep them quiet
  • Sick dogs who were languishing in their cages without veterinary care

These animals suffered so that Iams and other companion-animal food companies could lap “new and improved” labels on their products. The following companies make topquality ood for dogs and cats—without harming animals in laboratories. Please help us drive animal abusers out of business by buying only from these companies. Companies not on this list either responded that they do conduct laboratory experiments on animals or they failed to respond to our numerous inquiries and are assumed to conduct laboratory experiments on animals.
