Comments on: Alternatives to Animal Testing

My name is Emily. This blog chronicles my spending a year (and counting!) of buying 100% cruelty-free cosmetic/household products (I have a list there in the sidebar -- it's called "cruelty-free companies" -- go look!) I also write about boycotting inhumane factory farming (buy humanely-raised animal products!), my life in the San Francisco bay area, and my dog, who I cook food for.

Hi Fiona,

You make a number of very good points! I think it's very important to remember that the pharmaceutical industry inflicts suffering on and/or kills a lot of animals every year, and that veterinary and medical research do as well. I've tried to read some of the veterinary research that has been done to animals, and I got about halfway through one article before I became too appalled to read any further. I really wish people did not perform any sort of research on animals.

I'm also appalled by your descriptions of adverse reactions and pharmaceuticals that don't work -- I believe that pharmaceutical, medical research, and veterinary research innovation is bought at the expense of the suffering of millions of animals, and it really bothers me to think that those animals have died in vain to promote drugs that don't work at all. It's just disgusting.

Actually, my father is not a doctor -- I was just quoting from an article on the CAAT website whose author is a physician -- I should make that more clear -- but I hope that some physicians do read your comments and take your advice! More researchers should be devoting their time to discovering ways to use no animals in their research.

I especially admire your willingness to never take any prescribed medicine -- I occasionally do if I'm desperate, but it really bothers me to think about all the rats, dogs, cats, etc, who died to make that prescription pill possible for me. I wish everyone, like you, realized that a lot of animal suffering goes into every prescription medicine out there.

I totally agree with you in what you say and I am very against animal testing. The BUAV website and the Uncaged website in Britian and Animal Aid are all against animal testing and they have on their website said that pet owners should boycott Hills and Iams because of the cruelty they are inflicting on pets in testing their pet food. I am also very concerned about the cruelty of veterinary research which I see often inflicts illness on pets such as deliberately inducing kidney failure. Another veterinary reseach paper I have shows that nearly 100 feral cats were killed just so that their urine could be tested to see if it had crystals in it.

I have veterinary research which shows that pet food is causing most of the illness cats and dogs get and Vets should know this and so there should be no need for all the cruel veterinary research they do trying to find cures for animal illness. They should use their common sense and realise that feeding pet food is causing most of the illness since I have veterinary research which shows that pet food is causing diabetes, kidney failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, hyperthryoidism, ibd and many other illnesses.

I was interested to see that your father is a doctor and he may be interested to know that the British Medical Association in 2006 issued a Press Release in which they said that 10,000 people die annually in Britain because of reactions to drugs their doctor prescribed to them and that 250,000 people are admitted to British hospitals every year because of adverse reactions to the drugs their doctor prescribed. The Times newspaper in Britain published an article last year in which they said the Mr. Rose, a senior Executive at Glaxo-Smith-Klyne admitted that most of the drugs don't even work and almost every week the British Medical Journal publishes articles severely critising the drugs industry and in December 2006 published an article entitled "Doctors must not be lapdogs to drug companies" and the Editor did an article saying that doctors are slaves to drug companies and must stop cowtowing to the drug companies.

The House of Commons Health Select Committee last year published a report on the pharmaceutical industry in which they said that fraud is going on because doctors were found to be taking huge sums of money from drug companies for giving their name to articles which appear in medical journals though often the doctor has never even seen the article but his or her name appears on it as an author but the drug company has written. The Royal College of General Practitioners (ie. doctors) called for a full investigation into the pharmaceutical industry and the damning report the House of Commons subsequently produced last year even accuses the drug companies of fraud. You can find it on the House of Commons website for the Health Select Committee on the Pharmaceutical industry.

I never take any prescribed medicine or any kind of medicine and instead do as Hippocrates said when he said "Let food be thy medicine". I eat a lot of raw fruit and vegetables and eat no cooked food and a friend of mine who had bladder cancer began eating only raw food and the last time he was at the hospital there were no cancer cells at all and so it is clear that eating processed and cooked food is causing cancer and many other illnesses.
