Breakfast/Lunch:

Today I actually ate breakfast — shocking, I know! — really it was breakfast for lunch (even better!).  I had vegan french toast, vegan sausage, some fruit, and a soy latte.  It was really nice to have breakfast because I got to indulge in my love for maple syrup.  The more maple syrup, the better!

The sausage was good — I was REALLY excited by it — but the french toast unfortunately didn’t live up to my expectations.  The crusts were rubbery and I don’t think the toast had actually had seen a hot cooking surface — it didn’t have that crisp, golden and slightly burnt surface you get from a grill or baking in an oven.  No char marks, no grill marks, no nothing.   It looked suspiciously microwaved or steamed.  I was really grateful the restaurant I was at offered vegan french toast, but it was seriously a few notches below the nonvegan french toast that the nonvegans were ordering, and I felt a little left out.  (I’ll just throw a pity party for myself!  It really wasn’t that bad — I just have high french toast standards!)  If you know of a place with good vegan french toast in San Francisco, drop me a line!  (Waffles would be most appreciated as well :) )

The best French toast (vegan) I have had, I made myself. Nutra-yeast, even if you don’t like it on its own, does wonders for making excellent french toast.

There is a recipe on the lj community vegancooking that I can give you a link to, or you can search it yourself? I don’t know if you have an LJ, but most entries are not friends-locked.

    I like this one:

but I was so picky as a kid that I don’t recall what french toast is like, I rarely had it. The power of groupsourcing helps figure out which recipes rock, though!

    Hi Laura!

Thanks for the recipes! Those look delicious! And thanks for telling me about the trick with nutra-yeast — I didn’t realize it helped french toast taste better. I’m a big believer in going out for french toast though — I hate cooking on weekend mornings :)

    Regards,
