Living Cruelty Free

My name is Emily, and I’m a cruelty-freeist — I’m really opposed to causing needless animal suffering. This blog chronicles my spending a year (and counting!) of buying toiletries made by companies whose final products AND initial ingredients were never, ever tested on animals. Other than that, I’m your regular run of the mill vegetarian trying to go vegan (but I am a strong supporter of humane omnivorism since I used to be a carnivore — I don’t think you’re scum if you eat meat, I just hope you’ll consider switching to not supporting horrific factory farming conditions). I live in the San Francisco bay area, I have a dog I cook food for, and I hope I can help you if you’re thinking of adding more cruelty-freeism to your life!

Australia’s Cruelty Free Shop (5/5 Stars)

There’s only one other store (that I’ve found) besides White Rabbit Beauty that sells only cruelty-free products, and that is the Cruelty Free Shop. The Cruelty Free Shop sells products that are genuinely cruelty-free and 100% vegan. It sells cosmetics, household products, vegan foods, and books, magazines, and lifestyle accessories with a cruelty-free/vegan theme. It has been running for over five years to make sure genuinely cruelty-free products are readily available in a quick and easy way for people who care about animals. Its goal is to make it easier for people who try to buy cruelty-free products but find it too hard, are unable to find them, or have difficulty figuring out which really are cruelty-free. The Cruelty Free Shop makes all those problems disappear — all products are certified cruelty-free and 100% vegan.

The owner of the Cruelty-Free Shop, Jessica, also runs Sydney’s first all vegan Cruelty-free Living Festival for Animal Liberation NSW (doesn’t that sound fantastic? It’s on in a month — I wish I could go!). The goal of the festival is to educate the public about practical things they can do every day to reduce animal suffering. Jessica also does fundraising for an animal rescue group by featuring one of their homeless animals on the shop’s home page — the Cruelty Free Shop and the Cruelty Free Shop customers have managed to raise around $9,000 for a number of animal rescue groups such as Animal Rights and Rescue Group, Horse Rescue, The Donkey Shelter, NSW Animal Rescue, A Poultry Place, Monika’s Doggie Rescue, World League for the Protection of Animals, Sydney Pet Rescue and Adoption, Edgar’s Mission, and Friends of the Hound, as well over the past couple of months. She also supports animal rights organizations by donating gift hampers for use as raffle prizes to Animal Liberation NSW, Animal Liberation Victoria, Choose Cruelty Free Australia, Aduki Magazine, Animals Asia, Australian Association for Humane Research, Humane Battery Cage Project, and Vegan Society.

I just took a quick look at all the products available at the Cruelty Free Shop, and there are a lot of them — Zuzu Luxe, Gaia, Herbon, Natracare, Pure Gaisha, Inika, MyUtopia, Hemp Oil, Melrose, Allure Bath Elixir, Cleopatra’s Bath Milk, Natio, the Body Crystal, Castile liquid soap, Cruelty Free (soap), Eco Dent, Vicco (toothpaste), Glyde, Nature’s Remedy (salve), Wally (razors), Natural Baby Care, Herb Doctor pet products, Greenpet products, Peanut Woofer Treats, VeganPet, Cruelty Free Care, Aware (Laundry), and Naturespray (air fresheners).

So if you’re in Australia, you should definitely check out the Cruelty Free Shop. I only wish it were in the U.S. . . .
