The sister organization to the U.S.’s Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics in Europe is the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments. It also has the Humane Cosmetics Standard that the CCIC has, and it uses a similar leaping bunny logo, only it has a ring of stars around the leaping bunny.

The ECEAE is Europe’s alliance of organizations that works to campaign peacefully on behalf of laboratory animals in an effort to eventually ban cosmetics testing on animals. (It’s been pretty successful — at least, in 2013 all European cosmetic companies will be forced to go cruelty-free.) It was initially established to lobby the European Parliament to end cosmetics testing, but it proved such a success that it continued its campaigning alliance and continues to meet regularly to further anti-animal-testing campaigns and make sure that laboratory animals are high on the European political agenda. The ECEAE’s current lobbying and campaigning activities are focused on the proposed EU chemical legislation REACH, the use of primates in experiments, maintaining the ban on cosmetics testing on animals, and promoting the use of humane, reliable, cost-effective, scientifically valid alternatives to animal experiments. It has a monthly update on animal testing issues in the European Union — Testing Times. You can also sign up for email updates from the ECEAE (on the front page of their website).

I think ECEAE is a fantastic coalition — it’s against all the things I’m against, and for all the things I’m for — I just have one (tiny) criticism — why isn’t there a list of ECEAE-approved-conforming -to-the-Humane-Cosmetics-Standard-products on their website? (There is a link that looks like it might be that, but the link is dead.) The U.S.-based CCIC has a list of CCIC-approved-conforming-to-the-Humane-Cosmetics-Standard-products, after all. The ECEAE website states instead to go to the one of the 18 member organizations in your country, and check their lists of cruelty-free products if you want to find out what cruelty-free products are produced in that country. This is problematic for me because none of them are in my country, it’s a pain to check all of those websites if I want to find a comprehensive list of cruelty-free products, and I’ve checked almost all of them, and a bunch of them don’t seem to have a list of cruelty-free companies (though I can’t read most of the languages so I may just be missing them). Also I’m confused as to who these companies license the leaping bunny logo from, if it’s not the ECEAE.

Some of these organizations have lists of companies that they state subscribe to the Humane Cosmetics Standard: the British Union to Abolish Vivisection has a list (and it’s very nice — it has a search function, and you can restrict your search to companies based in the US or UK, cosmetics or household products, as well as to vegetarian society approved or vegan society registered, and on the BUAV site it states that BUAV manages the Humane Cosmetics Standard licensing for UK companies), the Finnish Animalia has a list, the French One Voice has a list, and the Austrian Vier Pfoten also has a list. (If you find another list of cosmetics off one of the ECEAE member organizations that I missed, please post it in the comments to this post, and I’ll add it in.)
