humane_seal Cruelty-Free Charities I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how new alternatives to animal testing can make donating to charities a much less difficult thing for people, like me, who don’t wish to support animal testing but would love to see a cure for cancer or multiple sclerosis. I never used to like to donate to find-the-cure-charities because I felt like I was giving my money to animal abusers who worked in state of the art million-dollar-laboratories-of-pain. On the other hand, who doesn’t want to support a cure for paralysis or HIV?

But there are some charities that don’t use animal testing. So you can donate to them without causing pain to any innocent rats, rabbits, monkeys, ferrets, etc.! This is a huge relief for me (not that I have that much money to donate, unfortunately, but still . . . )

The organization that has put together a list of approved cruelty-free charities is The Council on Humane Giving. Like the Coalition for Consumer Information in Cosmetics (CCIC), the Council on Humane Giving has several member organizations:

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
Medical Research Modernization Committee
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
American Anti-Vivisection Society
In Defense of Animals
National Anti-Vivisection Society
New England Anti-Vivisection Society
Last Chance for Animals
Beauty Without Cruelty

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in Europe
Humane Charities Australia

The Council on Humane Giving has a list of cruelty-free charities, and it will put any charity on that list if it will issue a Statement of Assurance that the charity “does not fund or conduct animal experiments now and will not do so in the future.” The charities can also enter into an optional License Agreement, and can then put the “humane charity seal of approval” — the rabbit logo — on their websites or brochures if they like.

noah_side Cruelty-Free CharitiesInterestingly enough, the Councils’ website suggests that over 65% of adults they recently surveyed “said they would be more likely to donate to a health charity that had a policy of never funding animal experiments, and over 80% of those under 35 agreed.” I thought that was great! I’m definitely in the “more likely to donate” category. Another interesting fact is that Noah Wyle appears to be the celebrity spokesperson for the Council for Humane Giving. Yay Noah!

The Council on Humane Giving also has a great list of factsheets and articles that refute the use of animals in research. I will definitely devote a whole post to this sometime in the future.

Anyway, here is a list of charities that are cruelty free. The original is here:
