Here is a list of all the Coalition for Consumer Information in Cosmetics (CCIC) approved companies in the US — the original list is available here. All of these companies have taken a voluntary pledge to never test on animals during any stage of product development, and their ingredient suppliers make the same pledge and the result is a product that is 100% free of new animal testing. Some of the companies have paid a fee to license the CCIC leaping bunny logo and they agree to be audited every three years to make sure they are complying with the CCIC regulations — this is noted in parentheses beside each company that has done so. Some other companies on the list have pledged to the CCIC to never test on animals or buy ingredients from suppliers that test on animals, but their parent companies are giant corporations that follow no such rules — this is noted in parentheses besides those companies as well.

Many of these products are available at your local health food stores, Whole Foods or Sephora (and Method products are available at Target), and all of them are easily obtainable online. A great place to buy a lot of them is White Rabbit Beauty — the cosmetics store that only sells cruelty-free products (they also do free samples!). You can really find almost any sort of cosmetic or household product made by companies on this list.

Thank you so much for this great list!

Only one question to ask, how come none of the big cosmetics brands is included like (chanel, lancastre, etc…) does that mean all these companies experiment on animals? i thought some of them don’t! i don’t know who exactly that’s what im trying to find out but i guess there were some who didn’t test on animals…

Again thank you for the good you are doing to many out there…

  4. Emily

    April 24th, 2008 at 9:36 am

    Dear Cherine,

I’m so glad the list is helpful to you! Um, well, in regards to your question, a lot of big cosmetics brands do indeed test on animals — if they’re listed on PETA’s bad list at caringconsumer.com, you can bet they actually run laboratory tests on innocent rats.

However, a lot of big cosmetic companies claim that they don’t test on animals, but don’t make sure their ingredients are sourced from suppliers that don’t test on animals. Since a lot of animal testing could happen at the supplier stage, I feel those companies are misrepresenting their products as not having been tested on animals, so I will not include them on my lists (cough Benefit, Clarins, DuWop, Estee Lauder, cough). I only include companies that are certified ingredient and final product 100%-not-tested-on animals on my list of cruelty-free products. (Which is why I base my cruelty-free list on the Coalition for Consumer Information in Cosmetic’s list of cruelty-free companies at http://www.leapingbunny.com — the CCIC makes all the companies it lists as cruelty-free pledge to only source ingredients from suppliers that have not tested anything on animals. So you can be assured that anything you buy from that list is 100%-animal-testing-free.)

I hope that helped! Good luck with buying cruelty-free products!

    Regards,
    Emily

    Dear Ronna,

Thank for your kind words! I agree with you completely that animals are a bright spot in this world.

Gosh, I don’t know any good window decals offhand — I don’t have any myself for my blog — though I believe Anastasia-Stacey is making some! I have seen a lot of great window decals out there, just driving around town — I saw one once that said “Rats have Rights” that I really liked.

I just checked out AAVS, which used to have a really nice anti-animal-testing T-shirt which they’ve since gotten rid of — and they have a GREAT new bumper sticker:

    http://aavs.org/shop/display.php?psku=bs-13

Doesn’t that look nice? I may have to buy one of those!

In regards to your question of finding any way to help animals on this website or others — I believe that buying products that haven’t been tested on animals is one of the best ways to help laboratory animals — you’re basically paying companies to not test on animals. It’s a capitalist method of helping laboratory animals. If you’d like to be involved in more traditional political activism methods of helping animals, there are many wonderful organizations that need your help! You can sign up with the Humane Society of the United States, PETA, AAVS, StopAnimalTests.com or the American Humane Association, or one of the many other wonderful animal-welfare political organizations out there — see if you can find one that really suits you — and help them write letters to legislators or businesses in favor of animal welfare, or join protests against laws that harm animals. You can do a lot from your computer! Seriously.

Just offhand, I’m on the HSUS and PCRM’s mailing lists, and the HSUS is always sending me opportunities to help oppose animal-harming stuff. Which is very nice — but unfortunately I can’t actually read those emails because they make me feel very depressed (Example: Oppose seal hunting! It’s really brutal and thousands of seals die in agony each year). Whereas I much prefer PCRM’s because they tend to occur much more infrequently and they’re less depressing (the last one I got was opposing building some animal testing facility — which depresses me less, especially if I don’t read the fine print very well.

I hope that answers your questions — if you have any more, please feel free to ask!

    Regards,
    Emily

    Hi Emily,

Are ‘Dove’ products also tested on animals and are not natural? I don’t see their name above. I was under the impression they were different and ethical?!

    Hi Pawan!

I see you found my list of 100%-cruelty-free companies! Yay! I hope you found some brands you like — if you have any questions, please do email me!

Um, Dove has a great “real beauty” campaign, which is lovely, but they are on PETA’s bad list, so they definitely test on animals. I realize I had a nonworking link up there to PETA’s bad list, so I fixed it, and here it is again:

    http://www.livingcrueltyfree.com/2008/06/29/cruel-companies-that-do-test-on-animals/

As you can see there, Dove is owned by Unilever, which does test on animals. So if you could boycott Dove, I’d be ever so grateful :) (Of course, if you want to keep using Dove, I’ll respect your decision :) )

    Regards,
